Plano: Starbucks & more

Dallas suburb Plano is not the upscale shopping mecca it wanna be. It may have Central Market, but it also has a ton of $1 stores and other cheezebag signifiers ... another way of saying there aren't nearly as many Starbucks as you’d want: a mere five (the crappy outlets located in smkts and Targets don’t count). But the coffee chain's expanding N, and that includes a new Starbucks on 15th & Custer. (alas, still in boring/predictable west plano; maybe one’ll come to the eastside soon?)
In eastside news: 3 new mom-and-pop restaurants in the historical downtown (where they’re building lotsa hipster urban loft thingies):
1. Feels Like Home. 1410 K Ave. #1109B, 214-578-1500. Philly-style cheesesteaks.
2. Vito Bistro. 1410 K Ave. #1109, 214-473-8046. Affordable white-tablecloth Italian. They have branches in FW and NY (where they’re from).
3. Macatrello’s. 1112 E.15th St., 972-312-1940. Petite deli does burgers, chicken, salads.

I prefer any Mom&Pop to get my brew on. SBux doesn't excite me all that much.

in my experience, most mom & pops do not match sbux' standard of cleanliness & freshness. everyone always talks about sbux' over-roasted beans. yes. whatever. at least they wipe down the machine every time they use it. at least they have regularly-scheduled cleaning & maintenance programs. at least their beans are never stale. at least their milk is never sour. get a drink from yr typical mom & pop and it has the caked-on bitterness that comes from never bothering to clean the friggin machine. in a big city like chicago or a coffee-centric city like seattle, you might find a decent indie. not in dallas.

well, this really caps a boring week: plano and starbucks in one item, shameless! however, i did like some of the sites you clued us to, such as the words for all the big numbers and the hipster cards.

the "& more" part of your copy doesn't appear to have made it into your posting. jack in the box will be so unhappy with you!

if there are no decent indies in Dallas, then why did this place blog about White Rock Coffee, which is a simply lovely, clean place. no white trash there. oh yea. it's not in plano.

and why are all my dad's staff here posting under psuedo-names? we have news to burn back on the homefront! but, it does give this place a look of non-careing bliss, i must admit.

slate has an interesting article on salmon, declaring it passe. also a good rebuttal from one reader, who paraphrased yogi berra: no one wants to eat salmon today. it's too popular

Wow, TG. I think your skills as an investigative reporter are quite highly honed! But now that you have posted the link to my blog, I am going to have to write something more often than every three months!

tg: thanks for pointing out that kirk provided info on the pronounciation of that chocolate place. and thanks to kirk for the info. (i don't always look at the previous days' postings to see if there are new comments; maybe i should)

red ennk - well in that case, maybe i need to direct you to my dissertation on wolfgang puck's products, at the bottom of comments under the "BK chick fries" item...

tg: i read your wolfgang puck comments and i agree with you on his soups. they do suck. the one pizza i tried was only so-so, too. but i think the coffees are better, as coffee with milk, sugar and other crap in it goes. i drank mine when i was on the computer and didn't want to take the time and and have the cleanup of making coffee. also, unlike my usual ero-calorie black coffee, i considered them as food, too.

long-time watchers of the dallas restaurant scene will probably recall that wolfgang was consultant to the mansion on turtle creek in the '80s, which was that spot's heyday.

well, i haven't tried that instant-hot stuff yet. i did try his frappuccino-style bottled coffee drinks (which came out before the canned ones); lemme say: i've tried just about all of those bottled coffee drinks, from the asian ones at central mkt to folgers' jakada. i like 'em all - except puck's! i tried all his flavors, and they were grossly sweet and had an unpleasant taste. but i can't vouch for these canned ones

i'm probably not a good judge of coffee drinks. most of them, including the cold Starbucks ones I have tried, taste too sweet to me. an exception is coffee au lait, which i think only has sugar if you add it. I liked the Crescent City version the one time I had it, which came from a giant serve-yourself urn that is maybe not cleaned as often as if it were at Starbucks.

yeah but i'm talking about the BOTTLED products. not "cold coffee drinks you get at a restaurant or public place". the canned wolfgang puck drinks fall into the same category as those bottled products - available at the supermarket like folgers' jakada, the asian canned stuff at CM, the starbucks' bottled frappuccinos / canned espressos - and NOTHING like a coffee beverage you buy at a restaurant or coffeehouse, which is made to order and therefore in a completely different category.

tell us again what you order at starbucks. then we can all go try it and decide if we think it's the world's greatest coffee drink
