starbucks update (part of a series)*

1. Starbucks has 2 new spring bevs based on green tea ("real Japanese matcha ground green tea leaves"): green tea latte - green tea w/ steamed milk, and blackberry green tea frappuccino which is only semi-new, really just a twist on the already-existent green tea frapp. Green tea is a big seller for sbux, acc to sbux employees who don't know they're being quoted here. haha sbux pr dept.

2. Meanwhile, for 2006, its annual new summer flavor frappuccino will be ta-da BANANA. "fresh banana pureƩ blended w/ coffee, milk, & ice." banana + coffee = hmm. Remember last summer's flavor was mint mocha chip; but no flavor can ever compare w/ the late, lamented mocha MALT frapp. some sbux stores still carry malt powder but the drink's not on the menu, thereby dooming its prospects for those not in the know

Of course the photo here shows an entirely diff product, starbucks' new iced coffee which has been addressed here previously, is now in stores, & which tastes somewhere between the milkier bottled frappuccino & the stronger espresso DoubleShot.

*no links today but with such exciting news, who misses the links, right?

Asterix is my friend, and I agree that he rules. Asterix doesn't drink coffee, though. He's Gaulish. But Starbux sounds like something that might have been invented Gaul.

As a former Barista, let me mention that 9/10 of the things you can get at your friendly neighborhood starbucks aren't on the menu. Basically, if they've ever made it, you can still have it. You can have a mint mocha chip or a Strawberry Lemonade frappuccino. And if they don't have the exact stuff, say that weird mint mocha syrup, they still have peppermint syrup and they have the mocha...TA DA!

As for the malt. I first worked at the Bucks in Lousiana, then in Wisconsin. In Louisiana NO ONe had even heard of the malt. In Wisco, it's all over the place. I bet if you called corporate and complained, you could get it anywhere. I mean, if they're still producing it, why can't everone have it?

Nicole - how lovely to have an ex-barista onsite. thank you for your visit

my malt saga is that i am a huge fan of the stuff and began to note its availability petering out, i think it was about 2 years ago.

so i (and a few other malt nuts) emailed, petitioned, moaned, groaned. last summer, there seemed to be a resurgence in availability; various stores in my area said they had it again. i ordered it whenever i ordered a drink.

but just last week, the closest store to my house claimed that starbucks was "discontinuing" it again, and that green tea frappuccino was far more popular than malt at THEIR store and that many times, they'd had to throw the malt powder out.

so i'm glad to hear your insider perspective. perhaps i shall remount my sad little malt campaign
