Coca Cola Blak

Coke’s new bev, finally coming in Jan, is big-big news: Coca-Cola Blak, a soda combining cola + coffee. Coffee soda rocks cuz it's 1. fizzy 2. coffee-themed 3. not yet quite mainstream. in the 90s, Starbucks did Mazagran, an awesome coff soda tragically ahead of its time; Pepsi’s Kona also failed. But Ernest Borgnine’s daughter Nancy makes an intense coff soda (ltd avail), & Green Mountain Coffee just intro’d Double-Bean Elixirs, a line of coff sodas in 5 syrupy flavors. Most of those are pure coffee; but coffee-plus cola? Blak represents Coke’s latest attempt to gnaw off a piece of the Red Bull & Frappuccino mkt. Like those bevs, the 8-oz Blak is smaller than the usual 12-oz soda & said to have a "coffee-like" froth when poured.

Cool bottle and I'll have to give it a try, although I doubt it goes well with rum.

And, since it has the long-vowel indicator over the 'a' shouldn't it be called 'blake?'

BK's Blog, THANK YOU for noticing the line over the A! i was just sounding it out myself, "black" vs. "blake". i think it's just sposed to be graphically catchy, don't you? implying some kind of scandanavian touch. the bottle is sposed to echo the old-time coke bottle ...

can we conclude that the combination of coffee + cola does not excite clairevoyant in the same way that chocolate + cherry does?

I have a hard time even imagining what this will taste like. Just never had the urge to pour a Coke into my morning coffee, I guess.

I have to question the market strategy, too. Aren't they aiming for a demographic that normally drinks Coke, instead of coffee, in the morning? If so, aren't they cannibalizing a segment they already own?

I read a piece that said Blak is targeted to "adults". (Isn't it kids who drink Coke for breakfast?) I get the feeling Coke sees people drinking the bottled Frappuccinos and can't stomach not getting some of that action. It's no wonder they're losing the battle against Starbucks, Red Bull, etc. They don't know what the hell they're doing. Their efforts to compete against Red Bull have been a joke.

Those kids who drink Coke in the morning are now -- or soon will be -- the obnoxious junior lawyers and MBAs who are climbing the corporate ladder.

If they wanted to go after the frappucino market or the market for those amazing heat-themselves lattes, why not just start or buy one of those product lines? I think Coke already has "Georgia Coffee" in Japan. Why not just bring that here?

soof,
no, not a coca-cola drinker.
not too many carbonated bevs, at all, but given the choice it's Pepsi. (cheezborger, cheezborger!)

tg... I agree that it's likely just to be graphically catchy. But, it's yet another commercial bastardization of the English language. One should start asking for 'Blake' and see if any clerk knows why one is saying it that way.

Even Dog Breath, always screaming in caps, at least knows how to form a sentence...

I'd buy that for a dollar!

How widely will it be distributed?
