breyers banana bananza

Ordinarily, the words "new ice cream flavor" would provoke glee. But Breyers’ mix-in line - All That & Caramel, Brownie Mud Pie, Peanut Butter Tracks - don't they all reek been there done that? The latest is theft, plain&simple: Banana Bananza (banana ice cream-fudge swirls-&-chunks), which 1. copies Ben & Jerry’s chunky monkey 2. lifts its name from a now-dead sibling, the Good Humor Banana Bananza Fudgsicle, discontinued by Good Humor-Breyers parent org, CoolBrands. Banana ice cream is usually ok but some experts say this tastes & smells "fake".

Sounds like horrid stuff... and makes me want to go read about Tom and Katie in People.

Give me HD's Dulce de Leche any day instead!

That's OK, TG... everyone has an off day!

BTW, I really think that you should solicit Harriet Miers as a guest reviewer here. Her blog is soooooo tastefully done and, being a good ol' Dallas gal and all, I'm sure that she has a tip or two we could all use.

You can reach her here at Harriet's Blog

I am not a mix-in fan. Have sort of always liked Breyer's vanilla as a base for toppings-- fresh fruit, root beer, chocolate sauce, whathaveyou. Recently, however, I peeked into a recipe book for fast and fabulous desserts. One that sounded really fast and the author swore was really fabulous was vanilla ice cream topped by roasted pecans and maple syrup that had been thickened by an hour or so in the freezer compartment. I love hard-hard-to-find maple ice cream, so I tried it. I was underwhelmed, perhaps because I bought the Breyer's with vanilla bean flecks. It's vanillaness just overwhelmed the maple. Maybe someone could try this with another brand of vanilla i.c.?

The only truly good banana ice cream I've had was made by the ladies who brought churn-style freezers to the ice cream socials of my youth. However, as a child I was also fond of a fudgcicle-hard and icy banana ice cream bar that may have been similar to the Banana Bananza. It had an oily, metallic taste that was oddly habit forming. (a prelude to smoking perhaps?). There used to also be banana chews, little squares, individually wrapped, that were oily, metallic, soapy and oddly habit-forming as well.

I will only eat a fresh banana if it is near green.

Don't much care for Breyer's in general. I LOVE Chunky and that and Half Baked are probably my faves.

i have NEVER heard of sbux white choc ice cream with maple. and let me tell you, i, like ms. ery, am a maple fan and would certainly be interested in such a thing. i thought all sbux ice creams (made, as previously established here, by dreyers) had to have a coffee component?

Well, hold on, I think the sticky sweet stuff could have been caramel and not maple, but it was really velvety smooth and not at all too sweet. No coffee in it at all. Of course, this was a few years back, so they have have discontinued it now.
