Village Burger Bar

Sad to see that the Gallery Café in the West Village closed. Gotta move on. So a new entity takes its place: Village Burger Bar from Mike & Susan Matta, who own Magnolia Café & Bakery (ex-branch of the n.s.g. Celebrity Bakery) in Lewisville. VBB will have burgers w/ upscale toppings, sorta Who's Who-ish but a nicer hang, w/ salads, paninis, milkshakes, & root beer on tap, as well as microbrewed beers and a highly civilized wine policy in which every bottle stocked will be available by the glass.

Village Burger Bar, West Village, 214-443-9998, opening mid-Oct.

Twisted: The New York Times has a fascinating story today on a guy in England who won $15 mill in a lottery and is still acting like a "chav." Story has nothing to do with food, but know you and other NYCE readers like to keep up on all the latest trends, food and otherwise. And while chav is a new word to me,apparently it has been in use for a year. Know a lot of people it describes.

tg: see in today's guide that east plano has a new 2 star place! bet it makes you want to dive right in--or, more likely, bail out of that northern wasteland.

hey, twisted, what you got against people still having a good time after they come into money? worked for me. maybe i was an early chav.

d.b., re: the east plano place, i guess you're a new visitor to NYCE. i did a blog item on Macatrello's back in July.

but speaking of east plano, if scott is around, i wanted to ask if he'd visited this hickory house place up here on jupiter & 14th? i know he visited a hickory house, and i'm wondering if it's related to this one. which has a smoking barrel and a big stack of wood in front. which looks rather incongruous in its clean-swept-looking little shopping ctr. (BBQ: sooooo out of my realm.)

What's wrong with you, D.B, that you haven't memorized every item TG has ever written about? (Kidding with you TG - but that item you linked to,it's about east plano, not macatrello's.)

I confess, I don't know what chav is, either. Burgers, those I've heard of! I did quite like the Gallery Cafe. they had a very nice salad with dried cranberries.

I had a burger (well alright, it was a chicken sandwich) the other day at this relatively new place called the Cotten Patch Cafe in Keller. (There are some other locations--I don't know where.) It's like Razzoo's crossed with Fuddruckers (sp). It was okay. Certainly not the best, but not the worst either.

Dean: according to Times story, a chav is someone who is known for wearing gaudy jewelry, expensive but tacky clothing and who exhibits bad, antisocial behavior. one theory, mostly discounted, is that it stands for Council Housed and Violent. This guy, who is known as the Lotto Lout, was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet when he picked up his prize three years ago. and he has been to court more than 30 times since. charges include such things as drugs and busting out store windows.he refuses to clean his trash-strewn yard. among other examples oc chavs given in the article are david and victoria beckham.

having celebrity bakery creditionals doesn't mean much to me. never had anything really good from there.

Doesn't sound like this place is affiliated with Celebrity, though. Never set foot in a Celebrity Bakery myself. Doesn't look like TG is a fan. "n.s.g." is "not so good" right
